In late 2024 I started compiling a list of nitro stouts (and closely affiliated styles) brewed by independent breweries in the UK. I did this for two reasons. The first was that I love nitro stouts and wanted to keep track of what was out there. It is a style that has boomed in the indie beer scene in recent years. The second reason was that I wanted something I could show to sceptics who believe that stout starts and ends solely with the major Irish brand. The list was passively accumulated; I didn’t look for the beers, I just added them in as I came across them online or in real life. Rather belatedly, I have decided to share this list, so it can be a resource for others too.
The criteria of entry is that the beer must be brewed on a regular, if not permanent basis, by an independent UK brewery. It must be of pub strength (3.4%-5% ABV), must be a nitrogenated draught product, and must not have additional flavourings added into it. In brief, it would be able to play the role of a regular stout offering in a pub that didn’t want to stock a macro brand. Some of the beers listed are readily available, some are only available in the brewery taproom or a couple of local pubs. I have not personally tried all of them and cannot vouch for how good they all are.
The list is in alphabetical order by brewery name. Where the style is anything other than a nitro-stout, for example a nitro porter, then that is stated. Nitro stout is only stated if that is the actual name of the beer. Where possible I have linked each entry to either the specific page on the breweries website about the beer, or just to their website landing page.
